Ronan O’Rahilly, the founder of Radio Caroline, has died aged 79. He was known for popularising pop music on British radio and circumventing licensing laws by acquiring a former Danish passenger ferry and broadcasting from there. Many DJs who worked for Radio Caroline went on to have successful careers, including Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, Dave Lee Travis and Simon Dee. After an act of parliament outlawed offshore radio stations, Radio Caroline moved to Dutch waters and continued broadcasting.
